Sexual Aid Health Warning
[January 8th, 2008]

A Health Canada warning came up in my email alerts. It is a warning not to use a foreign made product marketed as a sexula dysfunction aid for men. 'Santi Bovine Penis Erecting Capsul' contains sidenafil which is used in several prescription sexual dysfunction drugs.

Unsupervised use of sidenafil by patients with heart diease can lead to serious cardiovascular side-effects such as sudden cardiac death, heart attack, stroke, hypertension, chest pain and abnormal heartbeat. According health Canada other side-effects associated with the drug include temporary vision loss, seizure, prolonged erection, headache, flushing, nasal congestion and abdominal pain. It should not be used by individuals taking any type of nitrate drug such as nitroglycerine due to the risk of developing potentially life-threatening low blood pressure.

Yet, another example of why you should not trust over the counter products for sexual performance purposes. You cannot always be sure of what you are getting. And in the case of men whose erectile issues are due to cardiovascular illness you can be increasing your risk even more.

Freaking and Grinding
[November 23rd, 2007]

Here is an article exploring dancing and sexuality among teenagers and young adults. Specifically hiphop dancing and the grinding moves that come along with it. Researchers found that that sexually explicit moves did not lead to an increase in actual sexual activity. They observed that such dancing has boundaries and is used as way of girls expressing power and boys demonstrating their masculinity. They also found self-control was a significant element of the dancing and if one was concerned about risky sexual behaviour it would be better to look at drinking alcohol and drug consumption.

Evolution of Mate Selection
[September 4th, 2007]

A few weeks ago I read on a message board about a mate selection concept called the Ladder Theory. The rating system aspect of the theory states that there are certain traits that women say they care about but really don’t (i.e. honesty, sensitivity, sense of humour).

Now a new study suggests that this dissonance between what we say want and what we choose occurs for both men and women.

In the study, 46 adults in a speed-dating session in Germany were asked to fill out a questionnaire that assessed themselves and their ideal mate, grading traits such as physical attractiveness, financial status, health and parenting qualities.

Most said they wanted a mate like themselves, yet when the sessions began, the men sought the more attractive women. The women, meanwhile, were drawn to material wealth and security, and set their standards according to how they viewed their own attractiveness.

I suspect this study will do nothing to help the bitter folks of both genders who like to put down the opposite sex for their choices of looks or money over other traits and qualities. That discussion, I think, says more about people’s insecurities and past pains than it does about evolution.

As an aside – The Ladder Theory site is an amusing read and I admit some of it definitely applied to my choices. Specifically, the part about women having two ladders – men who are just friends and men I want to have sex with – and never shall the two meet.

Provincial HPV Vaccination Programmes
[August 9th, 2007]

A few Canadian provinces are setting up HPV vaccine programs for girls and it looks like Quebec (where I live) will be doing so as well in the coming months. Certain groups are opposing it. Some are saying it will increase promiscuity.

It could give children an impression that they have a green light to sexual activity. It can give them a false sense of security in their knowledge about the risks of sexual activity, resulting in them being less hesitant to engage in promiscuity.

- Newfoundland’s Right to Life Association President

With 75% pf adults having at least one HPV infection in their lifetime, I really do not think going the ‘moral’ route and advocating abstinence as the best preventative tool is wise.

I know of some individuals who think 400 deaths a year to cervical cancer is not worth the investment into a program (they might want to consider the realities of not dying from it, but just having it and treating it – all of the financial, physical and emotional expenses of being diagnosed with cervical dysplasia (pre-cancer) and cervical cancer, and treating it). Lowering the likelihood of that seems like a good idea to me.

There are others who think the girls who get this vaccine will forgo STI and cancer screening in the future thinking they are covered. I have had a few vaccines in my lifetime. Most of which I had no say in. Some which require booster shots. They have not made me avoid preventive measures, screening or, back to the promiscuity scenario, seek out any rusty nails. Just getting a vaccine back when you were 12 should not effect your desire for good gynaecological care in the future or stop people from spreading the message that Pap screens are a smart move.

The bottom line to me is making sure that there is comprehensive sex education available to youths and adults is key whether or not they are vaccinated.

The Nose Leads the Way
[August 6th, 2007]

Researchers removed a certain gene in lab rats so that their vomeronasal organ (which senses pheromones) was not functional. The female rats subsequently began to behave sexually like males - they sniffed and chased females, mounted and thrust at male mice, made the ultrasound mating noises to attract females. After they had given birth they neglected their pups. The female rats however did not show typical male aggression. Researchers believe that this organ suppresses male sexual behaviour and has led them to believe that behaviour is not necessarily determined by hormones.

Instead of building a male brain and then a female brain, you build a mouse brain, and then there's a sensory switch that makes sure that the animal behaves appropriately according to its gender.

They are not sure if this finding applies to other animals including humans as they believe primates depend more on visual cues and that the vomeronasal organ is defunct in humans. Still it is pretty darn interesting to think of the brain being set up one way and then having a certain gene in females that helps surpress certain behaviours. I wonder if males of the species have the gene and if they do, what affect it has on their behaviour.

Motivations for Sex
[July 16th, 2007]

Researchers from the University of Texas looked at the reasons people give for having sex. The expectation is that the motivations would be simple and biological in nature – reproduction, experiencing pleasure and relieving sexual tension. The researchers found that it was not so simple at all. They identified 237 motivations which were further analyzed and found to be grouped into 4 large factors (physical, goal attainment, emotional, and insecurity) and 13 smaller subfactors. You can read the entire report here and some press about it here.

Update 1: Violet Blue's thoughts and an email exchnage she had on the topic are here.

Update 2: Elizabeth from Sex in the Public Square looks at research and breaks it down. Seems the methodology left something to be desired but still the results were still interesting and worth discussing - if only to get some better research. Read more here and here.

Mating Choice Behaviours
[July 9th, 2007]

I came across an article at Psychology Today that lists some biological and evolutionary reasons for certain mating preferences and behaviours. I really enjoy this kind of research and speculation. I don’t always agree with it, but it helps give me some perspective on why things are the way they are. While I might not be able to change something to better suit me I can always change my mind.

Women with blue eyes should not be any different from those with green or brown eyes. Yet preference for blue eyes seems both universal and undeniable—in males as well as females. One explanation is that the human pupil dilates when an individual is exposed to something that she likes. For instance, the pupils of women and infants (but not men) spontaneously dilate when they see babies. Pupil dilation is an honest indicator of interest and attraction. And the size of the pupil is easiest to determine in blue eyes. Blue-eyed people are considered attractive as potential mates because it is easiest to determine whether they are interested in us or not.

XXX Toppings
[July 2nd, 2007]

Sex is used to sell many things. Well, at least the allure of sex. If you use this product then you will be more sexually appealing is the underlying message in a great deal of advertising. This is even used in pizza advertisements (think Jessica Simpson and those pizza bite things). A pizza place in Winnipeg is taking the sex sells attitude to another level by including porn with their pizza. You need to show proof of age when you buy it.

Striking for Sex
[June 5th, 2007]

A Union in South Africa is making an interesting demand...

Monroe Mkalipi, a regional chairman of the powerful COSATU federations of trade unions, complained that work conditions are so tough workers can't perform in the bedroom.

This is a different work complaint – that it is diminishing one’s sexual abilities and consequently procreation. Work stress can affect one’s home life and physical well being so this does not seem that far fetched. Imagine if everyone who felt a connection between the two went on strike?
